9. Please list paying advertisers hosted by this
community network.
None at this time
10. What content creates the most traffic on this
community network?
The Visitor and Convention Bureau seems to generate
the most traffic at this time.
11. Briefly describe your marketing/public relations
efforts:
Local newspapers have carried both feature stories
and advertisements concerning the Huntington County Community
Network. The Network printed a promotional brochure for widespread
distribution around the county. The Network was an exhibitor
at the Huntington County Expo. Announcements about services appear
on local bulletin boards. Approximately 6,000 fliers were sent
home with area school children. Web demonstrations and training
classes have also been sponsored by the Network.
12. Briefly describe the biggest challenges the
network has faced:
The HCCN board has been embarrassed and confounded
by Ameritech's persistent sluggishness and lack of follow-through.
The promised timetable for the implementation of dial-up service
was not adhered to. Software was distributed to the public before
the bugs were worked out the system. More recently, customers
recruited by HCCN for dedicated access have not received prompt
responses from the Ameritech sales force. Prices for services
have fluctuated unpredictably. Accounts for dedicated service
have been lost or jeopardized (including tail circuits to a local
manufacturer and to the county school system, respectively) because
Ameritech could not respond to requests or orders in a timely
fashion.
13. Briefly describe the network's biggest successes.
The Network has been successful in posting a wide
variety of community information to its server. Content-development
efforts continue to grow. As a result, HCCN has achieved its
targeted 300+ user base months ahead of schedule.
14. Briefly describe the networks biggest failures.
Dedicated Internet access has been achieved for
Huntington College and the Huntington City/Township Public Library,
but additional tail circuits to schools and other libraries are
not yet in place. This slow growth of dedicated access is due
in part to the fiscally conservative nature of the community,
its overall size and development, and the sluggish response of
our preferred provider to requests for service.
15. Briefly describe the current stability of
the network's organization:
HCCN recently underwent its first changing of
the guard. Board elections took place on October 10, 1996. Some
board members left the organization for personal reasons, while
several new members were recruited. About a third of the board
positions changed hands. All of the officers (except the president)
continued in their posts. Importantly, the board continues to
be broadly representative of the community.
16. Briefly describe the network's biggest challenges
for the next 12 months:
The economic viability of HCCN is uncertain.
The Network has achieved a measure of success with dial-up service,
but this was the least important revenue component of its business
plan. HCCN has had only limited success in providing dedicated
circuits. Advertising on the HCCN web site is an unanswered question.
In the next 12 months, HCCN must develop creative means of achieving
financial independence.
