This photograph of the Horace Mann School was taken in December, 1997. It shows the distinctively Romanesque style of architecture. The former school is located on William Street in Huntington in a historic, established neighborhood called Drovertown.
The gym, shown here, has had the bleachers and locker rooms removed. The roof and floors suffered severe water damage. The wood paneling on the ceiling is practically impossible to salvage. The gym will serve as a common area with a reception section and activities area. A public restroom, manager's office and laundry facility will also be located here. Approximately six feet in front of where the men in the picture are standing there will be an elevator.
This is a picture of Horace Mann interior as it looked just before it was closed. The trophy cases shown here are still intact and will be maintained. The wooden staircase will also be restored and maintained.
At right we find a picture of the interior as it was found by Huntington Alert when the group took possession of the school. Almost all surfaces had severe paint peeling, which can be seen readily in this photo.
