Free Nonprofit Web Space FAQ
Huntington County Community Network, Inc. offers free web space to
nonprofit organizations that are headquartered in Huntington County.
What follows are some frequently asked questions (FAQ) about this free
service and their answers.
Who is eligible for free web space?
Any nonprofit organization that has its headquarters in Huntington
County, Indiana, is eligible to receive free web space from Huntington
County Community Network, Inc., if it is either recognized as a
nonprofit organization by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service or
it is a charitable, artistic, health or social service organization.
What about a site for my Huntington County business? What about my
personal site?
For-profit businesses are not eligible for free web space from Huntington
County Community Network, Inc.,
nor are individuals who wish to publish personal web pages. A huge
number of web hosting companies who will host
business web sites for nominal fees can be found on the web. Individuals can find free space
for personal web pages on such sites as GeoCities,
Tripod, Angelfire,
and AOL Hometown.
Must our nonprofit organization be incorporated?
A nonprofit organization need not be incorporated to receive
free web space from Huntington County Community Network, Inc.
Must our nonprofit organization have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status?
A nonprofit organization need not be recognized by the U.S.
Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit organization as defined by
Section 501(c)(3) or any other section of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code to receive free
web space from Huntington County Community Network, Inc.
What can we do with our free web space?
A nonprofit organization may use its free web space as it chooses,
to publish web pages about the organization, its services, or any
other information of value to users of the World Wide Web. All content
must comply, however, with the acceptable use
policy of Huntington
County Community Network, Inc.
In addition, every web site we host must include each of the
following:
- A link to HCCN's home page - something similar to, "This
site hosted as a community service of Huntington
County Community Network, Inc."
- A link to an e-mail address for someone who is responsible for
your site.
- A disclaimer that indicates that the hosted organization is
solely responsible for all content on its site.
How much free web space may we have?
Huntington County Community Network, Inc., does not currently limit
the amount of free web space it gives to nonprofit organizations.
Huntington County Community Network, Inc. reserves the right, however,
to limit space in the future, should such an action become necessary.
What will our URL (web address) be?
The URLs (web addresses) of all nonprofit web sites hosted by
Huntington County Community Network, Inc., currently have one of the
following formats:
www.huntingtoncounty.org/directory_name
or
directory_name.huntingtoncounty.org
The "directory_name" part of the above address represents
your organization’s name or an abbreviation of the name. For
example, the URL for Huntington County Habitat for Humanity is
www.huntingtoncounty.org/habitat
and the URL for Huntington County Safe Kids is
safekids.huntingtoncounty.org
We already have our own domain name (www.orgname.org). Can we use
it with our free web space?
Yes! Huntington County Community Network, Inc., is able to
host web sites that have their own domain names! Contact our webmaster
for more information.
Will you create our web pages for us?
Huntington County Community Network, Inc., is a small, completely
volunteer organization. Our members unfortunately do not have the time
to create web pages for other organizations.
We do provide, however, a way to help organizations find volunteers who will
create web pages for them. Visit the Huntington
County Web Volunteer Clearinghouse.
If you won’t create our web pages, how can we get them?
Depending upon your organization’s resources, you have several
options.
- Acquire a copy of Microsoft FrontPage and have one of your
members use it to create your web pages. FrontPage is fairly easy
to learn and works much like Microsoft Word.
- Visit the Huntington
City-Township Public Library, where you can have free use of a
computer that has Microsoft FrontPage installed.
- Visit the Huntington
County Web Volunteer Clearinghouse to see what web designers have
volunteered to help organizations like yours, and to make your
needs known.
- Contact a local school to see if any of its students have web
building skills they will volunteer.
- Hire a professional web design firm. Several freelance web
designers work in Huntington County.
How do we send our web pages to your server?
Organizations may use Microsoft FrontPage or file transfer protocol (FTP) to publish
(upload) their web pages to the Huntington County Community Network,
Inc., server. In the future, it might be possible to publish web pages via web
browsers. A tutorial of sorts on uploading your files to our
server via FTP can be found at

Will you provide Internet access so we can upload and maintain our
web pages?
Huntington County Community Network, Inc. does not have Internet
access services to provide. Your organization (or one of its members)
must have your own Internet access, or use one of the computers at the
Huntington City-Township Public Library to upload and maintain your
web pages.
May we use CGI scripts, Active Server Pages (ASP) or other
advanced technologies on our web site?
Yes!
Huntington County Community Network, Inc., now
supports the use of CGI scripts, Active Server Pages (ASP), PHP and other
similar advanced technologies with our free web space for nonprofit
organizations. We also fully support the features of Microsoft
FrontPage extensions.
Will the free web space service ever change?
Huntington County Community Network, Inc.,
reserves the right to make future changes to its services, policies
and procedures at the discretion of its board of directors (our lawyer
suggested we put this in!).
How do we request free web space?
Just fill out the application
form! Our webmaster will send your webmaster an
email with your FrontPage account name and password.
We already have a web site elsewhere, thanks. Will you link to it?
Absolutely! If your web site contains information about Huntington
County, Indiana, we will be happy to link to it. Non-profit,
business and personal sites are welcome, as long as they have a
strong Huntington County connection. Just fill out the
link request form! We do not charge any fee for listing web
sites in Huntington County's most comprehensive web index.
How can I get answers to other questions?
