Publishing/Uploading Web Pages on HCCN

As the site administrator for a web site hosted by the Huntington County Community Network, Inc you may have the responsibility for publishing/uploading the initial home page for your organization, updating existing pages or adding pages.

The purpose of this web page is to present a step-by-step guide for web site administrators.  The page includes a brief overview of concepts, how to obtain software, how to connect to your web site, how to publish your web pages, and how to view the pages once they are published.

Concepts

Publishing a web page involves transferring the web page file(s) to the HCCN web server.  This transfer process is also called "uploading".

A web page will have one file containing the HTML codes.  The file will end with .htm or .html.  The use of  frames or multiple pages will require additional files.

A web page that includes pictures will require additional image files.  Most picture files end with .jpg or .gif

Step 1 - Obtaining Software

A program called FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program is required to transfer (ie. upload) web pages to the HCCN web server.  This program is included as part of Microsoft Explorer version 5.0 or higher and Netscape Navigator 6.0 or higher.  If you do not have either one of these programs you should download them now.

Microsoft Explorer www.microsoft.com

Netscape Navigator www.netscape.com

There are also third party products on the mark for this.  FTP Explorer is a good, free program, and can be found at http://www.ftpx.com/. Other popular products include WS-FTP and CuteFTP. Many, MANY more are availavble by searching the web.

NOTE:  The remaining examples here utilize FTP Explorer, since it's freely available, and very small in size.

Step 2 - Connect to your web page account

After obtaining software start application.  FTP Explorer will look something like this:

You'll need to add your site to the connections list. Fill in the boxes, replacing "myhccnsite" with the site name we've assigned to your organization

  It's important to note that:

Once you've entered all the information, click Save, then click connect.  You should see a window similar to this:

While your list of files will differ, the site home page will always be the file index.html

Step 3 - Transfer your files

There are several ways to transfer files to your site while using FTP Explorer.  You can click on the blue arrow pointing up on the toolbar at the top, then navigate to the location on your hard drive that contains the files to upload, select them, and click Open.  Another method is to use Windows Explorer to find the files, then drag and drop them into the FTP Explorer window.  Use whichever method works best for you.

The following example demonstrates using the Windows Explorer method to drag and drop the files into FTP Explorer.

You should first re-size the FTP program window so that it fits on half of your computer screen.  Click on the "restore down" button in the upper right-hand corner of the window to resize.

Next open the My Computer program and find the folder listing your web page files.

Next resize the My Computer window so that it fits next to the FTP window as shown.

You can now drag files from the My Computer window to the FTP window.  To drag a file place the mouse cursor over the file you want to transfer, press and hold the left mouse button, move the mouse cursor to the FTP window, release the mouse button.

A window will appear describing the transfer of the file.

When the file has been transferred the new file will appear in the FTP window.  You will need to repeat this process for each file that you transfer.

Step 4 - Viewing your changes
To view the updated web pages, open a browser window and navigate to http://mysite.huntingtoncounty.org.

You can repeat steps 3 and 4 to continue updating files and viewing the changes.

Step 5 - Ending your session

To end your session close the ftp window by clicking on the at the top right or by clicking of the File menu and choosing close.
